American Bald Eagle

American Bald Eagle

The Bald Eagle is the National Bird of the United States of America. I recently had the opportunity to capture a few shots of this magnificent bird. My family and I spent the Fourth of July holiday at the lake and while we were there my father-in-law told me about an eagle’s nest high up in the trees. Through some borrowed binoculars I was able to see the young eaglet in the nest while its parents sat perched high in the trees on opposite sides of the lake. They kept a close eye on the eaglet and on the unsuspecting fish swimming in the water below. An eagle will catch fish by swooping down and snatching fish from the water with its talons. I also learned from my bird watching father-in-law that the eaglet will not get a white head until it is about three or four years old. So right now the eaglet is just a plain dark brown color.

Later in the evening my husband and I took our boys out in the rowboat fishing. About half way out and in an area called “the point” we got a clear view of one of the eagles resting high on an elevated tree branch. The eagle was not alarmed by our presence as it has probably gotten used to the boats that cross the lake daily. As I was taking pictures of the eagle I couldn’t help but think how beautiful this bird was and how fitting it was to see the eagle at the same time America was celebrating the anniversary of its Independence. It almost felt magical to see the eagle and be on the lake with my family all at once. It seemed like a perfect moment in time and I soaked in every second. There are moments in our lives that come and go but this is one I will always remember!

  2. I’m glad to know you had a good time and that you were actually on vacation – I got worried when you didn’t post yesterday! πŸ™‚ I think it’s really cool that you had your whole family there, for the 4th and you saw our Nation’s bird – really, you can’t beat that!

  3. Aww, thanks for looking out for me Kate! I also post on my fb page – there is a link on my home page. Sometimes I post quick notes or pics on there πŸ™‚ It was lovely being with my husband and boys fishing on the lake. It is so peaceful there. Seeing the eagle was a bonus!

    • Thanks for not calling out that I’m an idiot and you did post this on Wednesday… I just didn’t see it until Thursday! I thought about that last night as I was going to sleep and had to double check this morning!! I love fishing with my son… well, I like casting the reel… heaven forbid I actually catch anything! Mr. T would have to come rescue me!

  4. Hi Kate, it was two weeks since I last posted before this one so I had been missing for a little while πŸ™‚ Glad you like fishing with your son too! It’s not about how many fish you catch but about the time spent with family. It’s those moments that count. You are a great mom and I love reading your blog stories. Keep up the good work mama!
