Thankful Thursday – The Helpers

Seasons blog

“It’s ok, we’re going to get you out,” a voice yelled out in the darkness. An SUV lay flipped on its side as silhouettes of first responders appeared through flashing lights. My heart felt like it had jumped into my throat as I was ushered past an accident scene on my way home from work a few days ago. As I drove by a voice from outside repeated the words that have echoed through my head all week, “It’s ok, we’re going to get you out.” The helpers had already arrived and were taking care of everything.

Paramedics, firefighters, police, and other trained first responders head out into the unknown every day. These men and women run towards danger and sacrifice their own safety for others on a daily basis. They are out there in all seasons and weather temperatures willing to help wherever they can. For all the first responders – for all the helpers – I am thankful!

Thankful Thursday

Thankful Thursday with Lily

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching here in the U.S. It is a time when we are reminded of our many blessings. Every Thursday during the month of November I am going to share with you the things I am most thankful for! I am also going to post a picture of Nature as I am very appreciative of the beauty of the outdoors. My blogger friends over at A Working Mom Today and Mommy and Everything are posting for 30 days of Thanks during November. Please join us this month and share what makes you thankful!

As I sit here in the comfort of my warm home I am reminded that just over one year ago my family and many across the East Coast were without power due to Hurricane Sandy. We had no heat, no electricity, and gas was in short supply (yes, I waited patiently on line for three hours). We were lucky compared to those who lost homes and loved ones. I remember at the time feeling very cut off from the rest of the world. There was an eerie feeling walking around town with trees down everywhere, broken traffic lights dangling in the wind, power lines hanging on branches, and barricades blocking off flooded roads. Yet, it was also a time where family, friends, and neighbors came together and helped each other.

Every experience we have in life happens to us for a reason. Sometimes it is just a reminder to appreciate the things we have and the people who are in our lives. Tonight, I look back and remember what it felt like going through the hurricane and its aftermath. I am very grateful for electricity, heat, gas, a warm meal, my family, good friends and the kindness of neighbors. For all these things… I am thankful!

Kind Words

Kind Words Mother Teresa

I like this quote from Mother Teresa and I wanted to share it with you. I took the picture at Sunrise Mountain here in New Jersey on a weekend outing with my family. As you go about your day tomorrow try to remember this quote and be kind to others. People may not remember certain things about you but they will always remember how you made them feel. Choose your words carefully and be kind 🙂

Finding Dakota

Dakota 1 Blog

I haven’t been blogging for a while and there is a good reason – meet our new family member Dakota! There was a void in our home and hearts after we lost our beloved dog Sammie in June. I was not sure when would be the right time if ever to get another dog but then the boys started asking for a puppy after we returned from Ireland. So the search for Dakota began.

Our first challenge was finding a type of dog we all liked and one that would fit in with children and cats. We looked at some rescue dogs and even visited a breeder in Pennsylvania but none of them felt right. Then one day my husband emailed me a picture of an Australian Shepherd he saw on a breeder’s website from Oklahoma. As soon as I saw her picture I fell in love and at that moment I knew she would be part of our family.

After contacting the breeder Carla and going over the logistics of bringing a puppy from Oklahoma everything fell into place pretty quickly. Before I knew it I was tracking her flights from Oklahoma to Houston and then to New Jersey. On our way to the airport there was a beautiful sunset and I recalled a similar sunset on the night we lost Sammie. It was as if Sammie was telling us it was okay and giving her approval. At that moment tears of sadness and happiness filled my eyes. We will never forget Sammie but are looking forward to many years of joy with our new angel Dakota.
